Al Jazeera's special coverage, "Gaza: Promises and Reality," examines the gap between commitments made under the US-brokered ceasefire and the reality Palestinians face on the ground in Gaza. Over five days, the series explores how Israel's war on Gaza โ which has killed more than 73,000 Palestinians, including at least 20,000 children โ continues to reshape every aspect of life in the territory and its people. Day five focuses on the state of reconstruction and Gaza's future.
The UN and World Bank estimate that more than $70bn will be needed over the next decade to help Gaza recover. Human development has been set back by 77 years, with life expectancy plummeting to just 40 years. The US-backed Board of Peace, established to lead reconstruction and oversee the ceasefire, has failed to ensure Israeli compliance. Israel has expanded its control to 60% of Gaza, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordering the military to push to 70%.
Aid remains severely restricted, with only a third of promised trucks entering Gaza daily. The entire population is at extreme risk of famine, with nearly 400,000 people surviving on just one meal a day. The debate over Hamas's weapons has become a central obstacle to progress. Political analyst Eyad Jouda said the talks in Cairo are "pointless and valueless" because Netanyahu is not willing to see any negotiation succeed. Gaza is in ruins, with more than 80% of buildings destroyed โ an estimated 68m metric tons of rubble.
Only about 0.5% has been cleared so far, meaning clearing all of Gaza's rubble would take more than 140 years at the current pace. For Palestinians in Gaza, survival remains the focus, while recovery and freedom increasingly feel like a distant dream.
