An e-rickshaw driver accused of raping a 27-year-old woman passenger at a hotel in Aligarh was arrested after an encounter with the police on Thursday, officials said. Police said the accused, identified as Subhan, was later admitted to hospital with bullet injuries sustained during the exchange of fire. According to the police, the woman had arrived in the city by bus on Wednesday night and was looking for a place to stay when the accused approached her.
Read Full Story She later lodged a complaint, after which a case was registered at Bannadevi police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Assistant Superintendent of Police (City) Aditya Bansal said, "The e-rickshaw driver, later identified as Subhan, assured the woman that he would take her to a safe and reasonably priced hotel room. However, after she checked in, Subhan forced his way into the room, locked the door, and allegedly raped her before fleeing." Police said the woman is from neighbouring Kasganj district and had come to Aligarh for some work.
As her work was delayed, she decided to stay at the hotel for the night. After the complaint was filed, a team from the Criminal Investigation Wing was deployed to trace the accused. ASP Bansal said, "Using CCTV footage and electronic surveillance, the police team tracked the accused to a house in the Nagla Patwari locality under the Kuwarsi police station limits. When the police team raided the hideout, the accused opened fire at them using an unlicensed weapon.
Police retaliated in self-defence." Subhan was injured in the exchange of fire and admitted to the District Malkhan Singh Hospital, where doctors said his condition was stable. Police said further investigation is underway into the hotel rape case and the encounter that led to his arrest. Ends
