Rapid Read Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivers a joint statement with Japanese PM (Video screengrab) Technology has become a key pillar of the India-Japan relationship, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday as he held wide-ranging talks with his Japanese counterpart Sanae Takaichi and announced a series of initiatives spanning defence, semiconductors, quantum technologies, clean energy and resilient supply chains. Addressing a joint press statement after the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, PM Modi said the two countries are entering a new phase of their Special Strategic and Global Partnership, underpinned by mutual trust and expanding cooperation across strategic sectors. “Just a few days ago at the G7 Summit, I remarked that in today’s climate of global turbulence, mutual trust is our greatest strategic asset. I am proud that the India-Japan partnership fully lives up to this standard," PM Modi said. Welcoming Takaichi on her first visit to India as Japan’s Prime Minister, PM Modi described her as Japan’s first woman Prime Minister and a “visionary" and “popular" leader.
He also noted that she hails from Nara Prefecture, which he said is an important centre of the shared Buddhist heritage between India and Japan. “Over the past few decades, spanning sectors from automotive to electronics, Japan has played a pivotal role in India’s growth story, building an invaluable bond of friendship and trust. Today, with Prime Minister Takaichi’s visit, we are embarking on a new chapter in our Special Strategic and Global Partnership," he said. Highlighting the growing strategic dimension of bilateral ties, PM Modi said technology partnership has now become an important pillar of the India-Japan relationship. He said India and Japan had signed their first co-development project in the defence sector. “We have signed our first co-development project in defence today. We will jointly develop defence technologies that will contribute to regional peace, maritime security and a rules-based order," PM Modi said. The Prime Minister added that both countries remain committed to a “free, open and rules-based Indo-Pacific," describing it as one of their shared priorities.
