Dawn newspaper, quoting unnamed diplomatic sources, reported on Sunday that Naqvi’s two-day visit came after US President Donald Trump rejected Tehran’s latest response to American proposals. It also said that Pakistan was continuing shuttle diplomacy aimed at preventing the negotiations from collapsing entirely after momentum generated by earlier rounds of talks in Islamabad slowed sharply. Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency also described Naqvi’s trip as part of Pakistan’s “ongoing efforts to facilitate dialogue and promote regional peace". The visit, officially framed around bilateral and border security cooperation, came as the fragile ceasefire brokered earlier through Pakistani mediation continued to hold unevenly amid intermittent tensions around the Strait of Hormuz and prolonged disruption to global energy shipping. Iran’s official news agency IRNA reported that the two sides also discussed border trade, transit, exchange of goods and bilateral cooperation, while describing the recent high-level contacts between Tehran and Islamabad as part of intensified consultations following the Pakistan-mediated ceasefire.
What sources say Pakistan’s Interior Minister conveyed field marshal Asim Munir’s message to top Iranian leadership, said a top diplomatic source. “Pakistan is bridging United States and Iran through ‘to and fro’ messaging. The current message is being sent with ‘high hopes’ for resumption of peace talks in Islamabad. The timing of the message is crucial as Trump just concluded the China trip and Pakistani top civil military leadership led by PM Shehbaz Sharif is set to visit Beijing on May 23," said the source. Pakistan is trying to convince IRGC commanders and political leadership of Iran for peace talks and securing guarantees from China, Saudi Arabia and friendly nations for Iran, said source. “Munir is continuously in contact with US Vice-President JD Vance, other top United States officials, top Iranian civil-military leaders and IRGC commanders for peace efforts," he said.
Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Moneni praised Munir’s sincere peace efforts. “We deeply appreciate Pakistan’s efforts," he said.
