India-Japan Annual Summit: India and Japan are set to unveil a landmark Joint Declaration on Economic Security Cooperation during the Prime Minister-level Annual Summit on Thursday, with economic resilience, strategic technologies and supply chain security expected to dominate the agenda, top diplomatic sources told CNN-News18. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Sanae Takaichi are set to hold Annual Summit-level talks in New Delhi today.
Takaichi is on her maiden visit to India. She arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday, embarking on a three-day trip to the country. According to sources, the declaration is expected to emerge as the flagship outcome of the summit, underscoring the two countries’ shared commitment to strengthening cooperation in economic and energy security amid an evolving geopolitical landscape. The two sides are also expected to issue a joint statement on cooperation in artificial intelligence, while expanding collaboration in strategic sectors such as semiconductors, critical minerals, clean energy and pharmaceuticals. Defence equipment and technology cooperation, maritime security and collaboration under Japan’s Free and Open Indo-Pacific vision and India’s MAHASAGAR initiative are also expected to feature prominently in the discussions. The summit is likely to see the announcement of multiple agreements covering batteries, biogas, upstream oil and gas, and critical minerals.
Japanese support is also expected for a large-scale green ammonia production project in India as both countries seek to accelerate their clean energy transition. Diplomatic sources further said that India and Japan are also expected to launch a Next-Generation Mobility Partnership, alongside new initiatives in joint research and enhanced exchanges between local governments. Around 120 business-to-business memoranda of understanding (MoUs) are expected to be highlighted during the Prime Ministerial visit, reflecting growing commercial engagement between the two countries. Both leaders are also expected to announce commemorative initiatives marking the 75th anniversary of India-Japan diplomatic relations in 2027. The summit’s joint statement is likely to reaffirm the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership while laying out a roadmap for bilateral cooperation over the next decade, with a strong focus on economic security, advanced technology and sustainable energy.
