The victims, all daily-wage labourers employed at a stone crusher site, were trapped beneath the fallen boulder and died on the spot. (News18) In a tragic incident, nine labourers were feared dead after a massive rock collapsed at a stone quarry in Karnataka’s Bengaluru South Taluk on Thursday. The accident took place at the Kaveri Crusher quarry in Madapattana, where the labourers were engaged in quarrying operations.
As per preliminary reports, excavation workers were inside the quarry pit while rock removal work was simultaneously being carried out above them using an excavator. The accident reportedly occurred when boulders being cleared from the top of the quarry suddenly gave way and crashed onto the workers from a height of around 40 feet. According to the police, the victims, all daily-wage labourers employed at a stone crusher site, died on the spot. One of the labourers at the site told authorities that around 18 workers were present when the rock collapsed. Rescue teams and police rushed to the quarry soon after the incident and launched operations to clear the debris and search for any other workers who may have been trapped.
Several other workers were also injured in the incident and were shifted to a private hospital for treatment. Officials said that the exact number of injured was being verified. Police said the deceased were natives of Bihar and Assam and efforts were underway to inform their families. Further investigation has been taken up to ascertain the cause of the rock collapse and whether there was any negligence or violation of safety norms at the quarry.
