First T20 international, Chester-le-Street India 189-7 (20 overs): Iyer 68 (47), Sharma 59 (24), Dube 42* (21); Mahmood 3-33 England: did not bat Match abandoned, five-match series level at 0-0 Scorecard England's attempt to move on from a dreadful start to the summer was hit by the weather as their first T20 against India was abandoned.
Two days after Test captain Ben Stokes retired with defeat by New Zealand, England got halfway through the opener to a five-match series against India at Chester-le-Street before the rain set in. India, the world champions, recovered from 6-2 to post 189-7 in a first innings that was played through steady rainfall.
Heavier rain came during the interval, bringing the covers on to the ground. The latest England could have started a five-over chase was 21:00 BST, but the match was called off at 20:15. There was also an injury scare for the home side, with opener Phil Salt spending time off the field during the India innings with a jarred shoulder.
The second match in the series is at Old Trafford on Saturday.
