(IMAGE: AFP) The Indian embassy in Russia on Sunday confirmed that one Indian worker was killed and three others injured in a drone attack in the Moscow region. Embassy officials have visited the injured workers in hospital, according to the mission. “One Indian worker has lost his life and three others have been injured in a drone attack in Moscow region earlier today. Embassy officials have visited the location and met the injured workers in the hospital," the embassy said in a post on X.
“The Embassy condoles the loss of life and is working with the company management and local authorities to provide necessary assistance to the workers," it added. The confirmation came hours after Russia said it faced a wave of nearly 600 Ukrainian drone attacks overnight that reportedly killed four people. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the barrage as “entirely justified" retaliation for Russia’s continued attacks on Ukraine. Air defences shot down 556 drones overnight across the country, Russia’s defence ministry said, with another 30 drones intercepted after dawn in one of the largest Ukrainian barrages of the ongoing conflict so far. These interceptions — far above the few dozen more often reported — took place across 14 Russian regions, as well as the Crimean peninsula annexed from Ukraine and the Black and Azov seas, the ministry added.
Ukraine has stepped up drone attacks on targets deep inside Russia in recent weeks, aiming to knock out oil refineries, depots and pipelines, as both sides seek to degrade each other’s infrastructure. TASS cited Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin as saying air defences had destroyed 81 drones headed for Moscow since midnight, making it the largest attack on the capital in more than a year. Sobyanin said 12 people were wounded, mostly near the entrance to Moscow’s oil refinery, while three houses were damaged. The “technology" of the refinery was not damaged, he added. Moscow regional Governor Andrei Vorobyov said a woman was killed when a home was hit in Khimki, north of the capital, adding that rescuers were searching the debris for another person. Two men were killed in the village of Pogorelki in the Mytishchi district.
Several residential high-rises and infrastructure facilities were damaged, he said.
