Amid growing speculation regarding an impending cabinet reshuffle, the focus has shifted to the representation of women in the Union Council of Ministers. Currently, the cabinet includes seven women ministers, with only two holding full cabinet ranks and five serving as ministers of state. Despite the passage of the women's reservation legislation, the recent general elections witnessed a decline in the number of women elected to parliament compared to the previous term.
Women currently make up only thirteen percent of the parliament, trailing behind several international democracies. Discussions highlight that while there is no shortage of capable women leaders or voters, the primary hurdle remains within political party headquarters where ticket distribution is heavily skewed. First-generation women politicians face significant challenges in securing safe seats or prominent cabinet portfolios, with dynastic advantages frequently favouring male candidates.
The core question remains whether the anticipated cabinet reshuffle will address this disparity and induct more women members of parliament into critical decision-making roles.
