The Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, Mysuru, has successfully performed the Unicorn procedure on a 73-year-old cardiac patient. According to the Hospital’s Medical Superintendent Dr. K. S. Sadanand, the procedure performed on Kamalamma Marigowda is the fourth Unicorn procedure performed in Karnataka and the first at Jayadeva Hospital, making it a significant milestone for the institution. A statement here said the procedure was carried out by a team led by Dr. Harshabasappa and Dr. Shrinidhi Heggade.
The patient Kamalamma Marigowda, a resident of Goralli village in Periyapatna taluk, was not suitable for open-heart surgery. Therefore, doctors opted for the highly advanced and rare Unicorn technique, which is used during a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) procedure to prevent potentially fatal blockage of the coronary arteries that may occur during valve replacement, said the statement. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Harshabasappa said another complex TAVI procedure was successfully performed on the same day on 73-year-old S.

Harshabasappa said that successfully carrying out two highly complex TAVI procedures on the same day demonstrates that the Mysuru unit of Jayadeva Hospital is fully equipped to provide world-class structural heart interventions, the statement added.
