Mumbai Tree Collapse Kills 11-Year-Old Boy As BMC Ignores Local Warnings
An 11-year-old boy, Vihan Shrivastava, died and five other children were injured when a roadside tree crashed onto their school bus in Mumbai's Chembur area
An 11-year-old boy, Vihan Shrivastava, died and five other children were injured when a roadside tree crashed onto their school bus in Mumbai's Chembur area. Local residents allege that cement roadwork had weakened the tree's roots and that their prior complaints to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) regarding the tree's condition were ignored. The incident raises questions about civic infrastructure, public safety, and the effectiveness of tree audits. A fresh tree census using ground penetration radar only began this year after an eight-year gap, and a new tech-based tree health audit pilot currently excludes the Chembur area.
Between May 2023 and May 2026, tree falls across Mumbai have reportedly caused 12 deaths and 125 injuries. An official inquiry has been ordered to examine the residents' allegations and determine if the tragedy could have been prevented. The incident highlights the recurring dangers faced by citizens during the monsoon season and the accountability of civic authorities.
