In two separate incidents highlighting severe civic issues, two children lost their lives in Mumbai and Ambala. In Mumbai's Chembur, an 11-year-old boy named Vihaan died when a 60 to 70-year-old pipal tree collapsed onto his Universal School bus. Five other students were hospitalised. Local residents alleged that they had warned the contractor about the hollow roots during road concretisation three months prior.
However, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation claimed no official complaint was received and that a survey in May found the tree to be sturdy. Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhire has constituted an inquiry committee to submit a report within eight days. In a parallel tragedy in Ambala, a four-year-old boy, Niraj Singh, died after falling into a 220-feet-deep open borewell. Despite a 21-hour multi-agency rescue operation, the boy was declared brought dead at the hospital.
Both incidents raise serious questions about the failure of local authorities to adhere to basic safety protocols and prevent the loss of young lives.
