West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari (File Photo) The West Bengal government has intensified its action against alleged illegal immigrants, with senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari issuing a strong warning asking infiltrators to “run before the government takes action". Speaking on the issue, CM Adhikari said the move was being carried out under the existing Foreigners’ Act and not under any new law. “This is not a new law, but the already existing Foreigners’ Act. They should leave this place immediately," he said. What CM Suvendu Adhikari said? CM Adhikari said it was the responsibility of Bangladesh to accept its citizens back. “Bangladesh has already said that it is ready to accept its citizens back from our country," he stated.
He also claimed he had instructed police not to send alleged infiltrators to prison. “Why should we host them after all? Why should we waste India’s resources? Are these infiltrators our sons-in-law?" he remarked. He warned that strict action would follow if people did not leave voluntarily. “Leave from here quickly, otherwise the government will take strict action," he said. Bangladeshi crowd gathers near border On Tuesday morning, a crowd gathered in the Hakimpur border area in North 24 Parganas district. The people were believed to have assembled there to return to Bangladesh as the state government stepped up its drive against suspected illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. Similar scenes had earlier been reported during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. The latest developments came after the West Bengal government operationalised holding centres for suspected foreign nationals and introduced a stricter enforcement mechanism under its “detect, delete and deport" policy. A Bangladeshi national present near the border spoke to reporters about the situation. “I have been living here in Dum Dum for the past one or two years.
If the administration does not keep us here, then what can we do?" the person said. The remarks came as authorities continued verification and identification drives in different parts of the state. Malda opens first holding centre According to reports, Malda became the first district in West Bengal to operationalise a holding centre for suspected illegal foreign nationals. The facility has been set up at Chandan Park in English Bazar. Officials said nine suspected Bangladeshi nationals are currently being housed there. They include three women and six minors who were brought from Gazole’s Pandua area under tight security. The holding centre has CCTV surveillance, police deployment, civil defence personnel and arrangements for food and upkeep. Authorities said the centre was created to temporarily house foreign nationals detained over allegations of illegal entry or lack of valid documents. ‘Detect, delete and deport’ policy The development followed directions issued by the Foreigners’ Branch of the state Home and Hill Affairs Department. District administrations across the state were instructed to establish holding centres for “apprehended foreigners" and “released foreign prisoners awaiting deportation or repatriation".
