(Unsplash/Representative) In a tragic incident from Delhi’s Mustafabad area, a 25-year-old newlywed woman allegedly died by suicide by jumping from the fourth floor of a building, with her family accusing her husband and in-laws of dowry harassment, according to police. The incident took place on Monday. The woman was rushed to the hospital, where she was declared dead, according to news agency PTI, citing police officials.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the woman had married the man of her choice around three months ago. Her family alleged that about a month after the marriage, the husband and his family began demanding gold and cash. The woman’s family alleged that she was being mentally harassed over the demands and had been under severe stress for the past few weeks, ultimately driving her to suicide. Police said legal action is being taken and further investigation into the matter is underway. This came after the death of actor-model Twisha Sharma at her marital home in Bhopal sent shockwaves through the country, prompting a furious debate on dowry practices in India. Sharma’s death has emerged as a high-profile case centered around allegations of dowry harassment, mental and physical abuse.
Her husband Samarth Singh, who is a lawyer, is currently under police custody. Twisha’s mother-in-law Giribala Singh, a retired judge, has also been named an accused in the case. Sharma’s family has alleged tampering of evidence and procudural irregularities in the probe, seeking scrutiny of phone records and other material concerning the case. The family alleged that their daughter was continuously subjected to physical assault and mental harassment by her husband as well as in-laws, who were demanding more dowry.
More recently, a 29-year-old woman was found hanging at her in-laws’ residence in Lucknow’s Thakurganj area on Monday, triggering allegations of dowry harassment and murder from her family members.
