(IMAGE: PTI FILE) Police are investigating whether the alleged murder of Pune realtor Ketan Agarwal was not only meticulously planned but also rehearsed before it was allegedly carried out at Lohagad Fort last month. Investigators are examining whether Ketan’s fiancée, Siya Goyal, and her alleged lover, Chetan Chaudhary, had earlier visited another secluded spot near their home in Pune to practise pushing him into a gorge before allegedly executing the plan on June 18. Police are now set to inspect the location and gather evidence as part of the probe, sources told CNN-News18 on Wednesday.
The fresh line of investigation comes even as Pune Rural Police continue piecing together the events leading up to Agarwal’s death, which investigators believe was the result of a premeditated conspiracy. On Wednesday, police recreated the crime scene with Chaudhary at Lohagad Fort, where Agarwal was allegedly pushed off a cliff. Investigators reconstructed the sequence of events to verify statements and examine the movements of the accused before and after the incident. A similar crime scene reconstruction was carried out with Goyal on Sunday, during which investigators used a dummy to recreate the alleged push from the cliff. Police are simultaneously examining what happened to Agarwal’s mobile phone after his death. According to investigators, the phone remained in Goyal’s possession for some time before she handed it over to Agarwal’s family. Officers are now trying to ascertain whether any data, messages or other digital evidence was deleted or tampered with during that period.
Seeking an extension of the accused’s police custody earlier this week, prosecutors told the court that forensic examination of the phone forms a crucial part of the investigation. The case has also brought renewed attention to Agarwal’s relationship with Goyal before the alleged murder. According to police, Agarwal’s father, Vishal Agarwal, stated in his complaint that his son had repeatedly expressed concerns over Goyal’s closeness to Chaudhary and often mentioned the latter’s name during conversations with family members. Investigators have also said Goyal had earlier derailed the couple’s planned pre-wedding trip to Bali, an aspect that is being examined as part of the broader investigation into the alleged conspiracy. Goyal, 20, and Chaudhary, 22, were arrested after Agarwal’s death and remain in police custody till July 3. Police allege the duo conspired to murder Agarwal, who was set to marry Goyal in November.
