A 29-year-old staff nurse was allegedly strangled to death by her husband in Karnataka's Dharwad district after months of alleged dowry harassment, body shaming and domestic abuse, with investigators claiming the accused repeatedly insulted her for being "too fat" and said she could not bear children. The victim, identified as Priyanka Kamalakar, had married Basavaraj Waddar in December 2024. According to police and the FIR, what began as a new marriage allegedly turned into a cycle of abuse within weeks. Read Full Story Investigators say that Basavaraj, along with his family members—Renavva, Subhash and Siddaramesh, repeatedly pressured Priyanka to bring money and gold from her parental home.
The complaint also alleges that she was subjected to relentless humiliation over her appearance and weight. According to the FIR, the accused allegedly taunted her by saying she was "fatter" than her husband, questioned why she had not become pregnant, and repeatedly demanded cash and jewellery from her family. Police said that the harassment culminated on Monday night when Basavaraj strangled Priyanka to death at their home in Hanasi village in Navalgund taluk. The alleged murder came to light two days later, triggering outrage in the village.
Priyanka's family has painted a grim picture of her married life. Her uncle alleged that Basavaraj constantly mocked her appearance, telling her he did not like her because she was "fat" and claiming she would never be able to have children. In a shocking allegation, the family also claimed Priyanka had conceived twice after the marriage but suffered miscarriages due to repeated physical assaults by her husband. The allegation has not been independently verified by investigators. "He kept saying, 'I don't like her. She is fat.
She can't have children.' She became pregnant twice, but because of the beatings, both pregnancies ended in miscarriage," her uncle alleged, demanding the strictest punishment for the accused. Police have registered a case at Navalgund Police Station and arrested Basavaraj Waddar along with Renavva, Subhash and Siddaramesh. They are being investigated for alleged murder, dowry harassment and other related offences. Ends
