Sahitya Akademi award-winning poet Puviyarasu was laid to rest with full State honours at Periyanaickenpalayam in Coimbatore on Wednesday (July 1, 2026). Coimbatore District Revenue Officer (DRO) S. Madhuranthagi, representing the Tamil Nadu Government, placed a floral wreath and paid official last respects to the late poet before the funeral rites.
Puviyarasu, a two-time Sahitya Akademi Award recipient and a founding member of the Vanampadi poetry movement, died on Tuesday (June 30). He received the Sahitya
Akademi Award for Translation in 2006 for ‘Puratchikaran’, his Tamil translation of the poems of Kazi Nazrul Islam, and another Sahitya Akademi Award in 2009
for his poetry collection ‘Kaiyoppam’. Family members, writers, government officials and members of the public paid their final respects before the cremation.
