Trump Speaks To Netanyahu As US Mulls Renewed Military Strikes On Iran Published By, Last Updated: May 17, 2026, 21:48 IST The conversation between Trump and Netanyahu came amid reports that the US and Israel are preparing to restart the war against Tehran. Rapid Read US President Donald Trump with Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu. (File) US President Donald Trump on Sunday spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the war with Iran before convening a limited security discussion this evening, Netanyahu’s office confirmed to The Times of Israel. This conversation came amid reports that the US and Israel are preparing to restart the war against Tehran. Axios also reported an Israeli official confirming the conversation between the two leaders about Iran. Netanyahu had earlier said that he was scheduled to speak with the US president to hear about Trump’s recent trip to China.

The Israeli PM also suggested that Iran would be a part of their discussions. Meanwhile, Netanyahu is expected to chair a meeting of his top aides and ministers Sunday evening for a security discussion in his office in Jerusalem, Times of Israel reported. He said that US and Israel’s “eyes are open regarding Iran." Operation Sledgehammer The phone call comes in the backdrop of Trump mulling fresh strikes on Iran, even as he recently concluded his visit to Beijing. Trump posted a cryptic message on Truth Social, declaring, “It Was The Calm Before The Storm“, alongside an AI-generated image that appeared to signal rising tensions around Iran. According to a report by The New York Times, Trump returned from Beijing facing “major decisions on Iran," with senior aides drafting plans for renewed military strikes if diplomatic efforts fail.

The report said US officials and allied countries were attempting to negotiate a compromise that could lead Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically crucial global shipping route, while allowing Trump to present the outcome as a diplomatic victory. NBC News reported that the US military is considering officially renaming the ongoing war with Iran as “Operation Sledgehammer" if the current ceasefire talks between the countries collapse. The changing of the name can also allow Trump to argue that the 60-day clock for getting the congressional authorisation for war has restarted. After his diplomatic visit to China, Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping was in agreement with him on the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and on Iran not having a nuclear weapon.
