Ronald Koeman Resigns as Netherlands Boss After Dismal FIFA World Cup Exit Published By, Last Updated: July 01, 2026, 11:56 IST Ronald Koeman has resigned as Netherlands manager after their World Cup exit to Morocco, saying family comes first as his wife continues her battle with breast cancer. Rapid Read Netherlands' head coach Ronald Koeman (AP) Ronald Koeman has stepped down as Netherlands manager following the Oranje’s heartbreaking FIFA World Cup exit, bringing an end to his second spell in charge after their penalty shootout defeat to Morocco. The Dutch were knocked out in the Round of 32 after a dramatic 1-1 draw in Monterrey ended in a 3-2 penalty defeat. Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber and Crysencio Summerville all failed to convert from the spot, while Morocco goalkeeper Bono emerged as the hero. The aftermath of the defeat was marred by online abuse, with the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) confirming that the three players who missed penalties were subjected to racist, discriminatory and hateful messages on social media.
Koeman’s Goodbye Koeman, whose contract was due to expire after the tournament, announced his resignation in an emotional post on Instagram and suggested he may be walking away from management altogether. “Looking back on my career, I feel especially proud. I have worked with clubs and people that shaped me and gave me memories that I will cherish for a lifetime," Koeman wrote. “We all dreamed of a World Cup in which we would write history. That didn’t work out. No-one is more disappointed about that than me." The 63-year-old also revealed that football had taken a back seat in light of his family’s circumstances. “The past years have made me realise again that there are more important things than football. Football has been my life, but health is priceless. When someone you love is fighting a tough battle, your perspective changes." Koeman’s wife, Bartina, is currently undergoing treatment after being diagnosed with breast cancer, with family considerations playing a major role in his decision to step aside.
Koeman’s Legacy Koeman first took charge of the Netherlands in 2018 and revitalised the national team, guiding the Oranje back to major tournaments while helping establish a new generation led by Frenkie de Jong. His impressive work earned him a move to FC Barcelona in 2020. His return to the Netherlands job proved far more difficult. Despite high expectations, Koeman struggled to recapture the momentum of his first spell, and the disappointing World Cup campaign ultimately marked the end of his tenure.
