Considering the aviation connectivity and the emergency transport needs of Kerala during natural calamities, a techno-economic feasibility study is being conducted for setting up airstrips in Idukki, Wayanad and Kasaragod districts to enable the operation of small aircraft and helicopters.
Replying to a question during the Question Hour in the Assembly on Wednesday, Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan said Kerala Rail Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL) has been appointed as the project management consultant for this.
Subsequently, transport consultancy and engineering firm RITES entered an agreement with KIIFCON ((Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Corporation), a joint venture selected through a tendering process. In order to expedite rescue operations
during natural calamities, construction work of five helipads has also been started in Wayanad district using the Scheme for Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) funds, the Chief Minister said.
