An investigation has commenced into an alleged land scam in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, where agricultural land worth fourteen crore rupees near a garbage dump in Sarai village was purchased by the municipal corporation for fifty-four crore rupees in December 2024. The deal, which bypassed mandatory procedures, saw land rates artificially inflated.
Following a complaint by the municipal mayor, the state government suspended the district magistrate, the municipal commissioner, and the sub-divisional magistrate. The government has recently escalated disciplinary action against these officials. Meanwhile, local residents continue to face hardships due to the adjacent garbage mountain, and the opposition party alleges the scam is much larger than reported.
