Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held a telephonic conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, during which the two leaders discussed the recent developments in West Asia following the conflict involving Iran, Israel and the US. During the call, President Pezeshkian briefed the Prime Minister on the evolving situation in the region and the way forward. Prime Minister Modi welcomed the understanding reached and reaffirmed India’s consistent position that all outstanding issues should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. He also underlined the need for sustained efforts to ensure lasting peace and stability in West Asia, while emphasising the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation and commerce, a key concern amid heightened tensions affecting global shipping routes. The conversation comes as India continues to maintain close diplomatic engagement with Iran through high-level political contacts and multilateral forums despite the recent regional conflict.
Meanwhile, Iran had earlier extended a formal invitation to Prime Minister Modi to attend the funeral ceremonies of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a US-Israeli strike during the conflict. Representing India at the ceremonies will be Bihar Governor Lieutenant General (Retd) Syed Ata Hasnain and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita. According to Iranian authorities, the public farewell ceremony will begin at 6 am (local time) on July 4 at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Grand Prayer Grounds, with the venue opening to mourners from that time. How India Maintained Engagement With Iran During West Asia Conflict Even as tensions escalated in West Asia following the conflict involving Iran, Israel and the US, India maintained sustained diplomatic engagement with Tehran through high-level political, strategic and humanitarian outreach. From conversations between heads of government to ministerial meetings and BRICS engagements, New Delhi kept multiple channels of communication open with Iran. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian twice during the conflict, discussing the evolving regional situation and emphasising the need for peace, stability and dialogue. External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar remained in regular contact with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, speaking with him more than five times during the conflict.
