The Opposition BJP has accused the Congress government of trying to stall the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) by creating obstacles in the appointment of Booth Level Officers (BLOs). Addressing a press conference in Bengaluru, Leader of the Opposition R. Ashok alleged that the Congress government had intentionally desisted from appointing BLOs in many places to stall the SIR. Citing an example in the city, he said the government had appointed only 10 BLOs as against the required 30 in a particular section.
Even those BLOs were complaining that the government had not provided allowances to them and had not granted permission yet to attend to their duty, he alleged. “The purpose of SIR is to ensure that only genuine voters remain in the electoral rolls. But this process looks suspicious as in Jayanagar, non-officials and Congress leaders have been appointed as BLOs in 20 places.
In Chamarajpet, BLOs are showing photos of Zameer Ahmed Khan, Congress MLA, during their visits to voters’ houses, though they are not supposed to display any party symbols,” he alleged. Discrimination in grants Ashok expressed displeasure over what he described as discrimination in release of development grants for the Assembly constituencies in Bengaluru by Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. “While Congress MLAs’ constituencies have received ₹100 crore, BJP MLAs’ areas have got only ₹40-50 lakh.
Pointing out that a majority of Assembly constituencies in the city are represented by BJP MLAs, he expressed concern that such discrimination in release of development grants was bound to affect Bengaluru’s development.
