The Left Democratic Front (LDF) leadership in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has demanded the urgent intervention of the State government over the alleged violations of rules and anti-democratic actions of the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP)-led governing body in the civic body. LDF Parliamentary party leader S.P. Deepak, in a letter to Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, said that the Mayor is unwilling to convene the council on time as per the Municipal Act or accept the Opposition’s legal demand to convene an emergency council.
He alleged that the BJP councillors are trying to disrupt the meetings by shouting down and threatening the Opposition councillors without providing them a chance to discuss issues such as Attukal Pongala cleaning, drinking water scarcity, failure in pre-monsoon cleaning and measures to prevent epidemics. After the Kerala High Court ruled that the oath-taking of 20 BJP councillors was illegal, their re-swearing was done unilaterally without informing the councillors of other parties. Deepak also alleged that the Mayor and his team are taking a stand to protect BJP councillor R.
Sugathan, who was arrested under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act [KAAPA], and currently lodged at the high-security correctional facility at Viyyur in Thrissur. “Women councillors participating in the council are being threatened with attacks. Many have been injured. The BJP leadership thinks that they can run the Corporation as a dictatorship,” said Mr. Deepak. UDF demand Meanwhile, the United Democratic Front (UDF) leadership on Tuesday demanded the Corporation secretary to take action, including ouster from the council, against BJP councillor Chempazhanthy Udayan who had allegedly tore apart the council attendance register after attacking Congress councillors K.S. Sabarinadhan, S.
Sherly and Anitha Alex after the council meeting on Tuesday. Sherly and Ms. Alex also submitted a complaint to the State Women’s Commission demanding action against Mr. Udayan and BJP councillors V.G. Girikumar, Vayalkkara Ratheesh, Sunil S.S. and Pappanamcode Saji.
