An American woman shared how the kindness of strangers in Delhi turned a stressful situation into one she says she will never forget after she was left stranded with a dead phone. Sierra Liliann, an American traveller currently exploring India, posted a video on Instagram documenting the unexpected experience and the local man who stepped in to help when she had no way of navigating the city. As she worried about what to do next, a local man, whom she affectionately referred to as "Uncle Ji," came to her assistance. Rather than simply allowing her to charge her phone and leaving her to manage on her own, he stayed by her side throughout the ordeal. Sierra showed how he welcomed her into his space, offered her a cup of chai and buttermilk, introduced her to his cows, showed her around his plants and even took her to his temple, making sure she felt safe, comfortable and at ease until she could continue her journey.
Reflecting on the experience, Sierra said the encounter perfectly embodied the Hindi phrase "Atithi Devo Bhava" - meaning "Guest is God." She described Uncle Ji's generosity and selflessness as a reflection of the warmth she had experienced from many people during her travels across India. "Uncle Ji showed me what 'Atithi Devo Bhava' really means," she wrote. Sierra added that she had initially been frightened because, without her phone, she had no way to arrange transport, access maps or inform anyone about her situation. Instead of leaving her to figure things out alone after charging her device, Uncle Ji treated her as his guest, ensuring she wasn't worried or uncomfortable even for a moment.
