Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay To boost usage of public transport, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has announced that they will only procure AC buses. Transport Minister Vijay Tamilan Parthiban quoted the CM informing him that the state government will only procure AC buses as he wants the public to travel extensively and comfortably in air-conditioned vehicles.
Speaking on the sidelines of an event conducted on behalf of the ruling TVK in Salem on Sunday, he said Vijay had recently travelled in a government bus during which he expressed his wish to have every remote region of the state connected via a bus network, according to a Hindu report. Last week, Vijay flagged off a fleet of 300 new buses in the state procured by various State transport corporations at a total cost of ₹127 crore. The new buses include 164 diesel buses and 136 CNG buses. During the visit, he also interacted with a conductor. The vehicles were immediately deployed from key transit hubs such as Koyambedu and Kilambakkam to boost connectivity.
The flagging off ceremony was attended by several senior ministers and officials of the state Transport Department, among others. On Tuesday, the CM directed district collectors and superintendents of police to strengthen law and order by identifying the root causes of crime, while stressing that no offender, irrespective of their influence, should escape punishment. Calling for stronger measures to protect women and children, Vijay said, “Women’s safety should be ensured without any compromise and special arrangements should be made for their protection". He also directed district collectors to hold internal online meetings with officials before taking up public grievances and said farmers, fishermen and differently-abled persons should be heard with courtesy and empathy.
