The CBI on Tuesday asked a court in Bhopal for permission to collect the voice samples of late model Twisha Sharma's husband Samarth Singh and his mother Giribala Singh, who are accused in the case related to her death. The agency also sought an extension of their judicial custody, saying several parts of the investigation are still pending. The court of Justice Aarti Aditya Bandil extended the judicial custody of both accused till July 14. Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh, a former district judge, are lodged in Bhopal Central Jail and appeared before the court through video conference. The investigation was later handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation after allegations of lapses in the initial police probe. Ankur Pandey, the lawyer for Twisha's family, told PTI that the CBI sought the court's permission to take the voice samples of both accused and to get the password to Samarth Singh's seized laptop so that the digital and technical evidence could be examined thoroughly. He said the agency also sought an extension of their judicial custody as reports from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory, the second post-mortem and the viscera examination, among others, are still awaited. Pandey said the court had earlier remanded both accused to 14 days of judicial custody ending June 30, after extending it on June 16.
He said the CBI told the court during Tuesday's hearing that a significant part of the investigation is still pending, including the CFSL and viscera reports. During the hearing, lawyers for Giribala Singh also raised the issue of a recent theft at her home and asked for it to be taken up. Her lawyer sought permission for her to be taken home under police protection to identify the missing items. The CBI opposed this, saying the theft and Twisha's death were separate matters and could not be included in the current hearing. Pandey said the court gave no direction on that issue, but said Giribala Singh could file a formal application if she wished to go home.
Anurag Srivastava, another lawyer for Twisha's family, said the CBI has not yet received the second post-mortem report. "We believe that Delhi AIIMS is preparing a systematic report, which is causing the delay. We are waiting for the report. The next phase of the investigation will proceed once the second report is received," he said. With the accused now in judicial custody till July 14, the agency is awaiting key forensic and medical reports as it continues its probe. Ends
