With this latest climb, the 56-year-old has broken his own world record for the highest number of successful ascents of the world’s tallest mountain. Kami Rita reached the 8,849-metre summit at 10:12 am on Sunday (May 17), according to Nepal’s Department of Tourism. He was leading an expedition organised by 14 Peaks Expedition during the climb. Kami Rita Extends His Own Record According to The Kathmandu Post, officials at Everest Base Camp confirmed the successful summit shortly after he reached the peak. Nepal’s tourism department congratulated the veteran mountaineer and praised his contribution to the country’s mountaineering industry and global image.
Born in Solukhumbu district in Nepal’s Koshi Province in January 1970, Kami Rita began his career as a professional climber in 1992. He first climbed Mount Everest in 1994 and has since returned to the mountain almost every year. In some years, he has even climbed Everest twice in a single season. His previous record-setting climb came on May 27, 2025, when he completed his 31st Everest summit. With Sunday’s achievement, he has now pushed the record even further. Because of his repeated climbs and years of experience, Kami Rita is often called the “Everest Man" by climbers and mountaineering enthusiasts around the world. Lhakpa Sherpa, known as the “Mountain Queen," broke her own record for the highest number of Everest summits by a woman.
The 52-year-old successfully climbed Mount Everest for the 11th time and reached the summit at 9:30 am, according to the Department of Tourism. Nepali Prime Minister Balendra Shah congratulated both climbers and praised their achievements. In a post on X, he wrote that the pair had “once again written history."
