At least eleven life-saving kidney transplants have been stalled at Jaipur's Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital since May 31st. The delay is allegedly due to patient files being locked inside the room of the former head of the nephrology unit, who retired. Despite completing necessary formalities, including police verification and donor clearance, patients are forced to undergo continuous dialysis while awaiting surgery.
Relatives report that acting doctors are refusing to take up the cases, citing the inaccessible records. The current doctor in charge claims the files were never properly handed over. The head of the department stated the treatment is continuing and that duplicate files are available, adding the room will open soon. Families also allege that some government doctors prioritize private hospital work over their duties at the government facility.
Rajasthan currently has only six senior nephrologists in its government hospitals, leaving the healthcare system severely overburdened as patients from remote villages travel to Jaipur for treatment.
