(Representational image) A woman, identified as Sai Surabhi, was found dead at a homestay near Nandi Giridhama in Chikkaballapur, Karnataka. Police suspect that she was assaulted and killed by her boyfriend, Mohammed Sanjith Ali, following which he allegedly attempted suicide. He has been admitted to the Chikkaballapur District Hospital. According to information available, Surabhi belonged to a Brahmin family from Yediyur. She and Sanjith Ali, a native of Kerala, reportedly became acquainted while booking a cab.
The two later grew close and eventually started living together in a house in Kumaraswamy Layout. Surabhi’s family alleged that Sanjith Ali introduced her to alcohol and narcotic substances, following which she became addicted. They also said an NDPS Act case had earlier been registered against him under the jurisdiction of the Kumaraswamy Layout Police Station after drugs were allegedly found during a party. When Surabhi’s mother objected to the relationship and approached the police, Surabhi reportedly appeared before the police and stated that she was a major and had the right to marry. She thereafter continued to live with Sanjith Ali. According to the family, Surabhi was subjected to repeated physical assault, including injuries to her private parts. She was later admitted to a rehabilitation centre in Mysuru, where she underwent treatment for six months. After completing rehabilitation, she returned to stay with her mother.
The family said Surabhi was later rescued from Sanjith Ali and taken back to Mysuru. However, they claimed she subsequently came back into contact with him for reasons that remain unclear. Surabhi’s mother Geetha alleged that Sanjith Ali had also threatened to kill her, following which she lodged a complaint at the Kumaraswamy Layout Police Station. According to Geetha, Sanjith Ali later tracked down Surabhi and murdered her at the homestay in Chikkaballapur. Speaking outside the hospital, Geetha alleged that Sanjith Ali was involved in several criminal cases, including in Kerala. She described him as a drug addict and drug peddler and alleged that he had administered drugs and poison to her daughter and sexually assaulted her. She further claimed that he was already married. Geetha said Surabhi was a doctoral and merit student and alleged that the accused had ruined her life.
