WhatsApp is introducing a major privacy update by officially rolling out a username feature that allows its three billion users to connect without sharing their phone numbers. Under this Meta-owned platform update, users can reserve unique usernames up to 35 characters. To prevent impersonation, WhatsApp is locking names associated with celebrities and public figures.
The global rollout for username reservations began on June 29. While Telegram and Signal have offered similar username functionalities for years, this change marks a significant shift for WhatsApp, offering users more control over their personal information.
