The crowd gathered after midnight, creating a relentless din with drums, air horns, loudspeakers and chants in an apparent attempt to keep the Ecuador footballers awake on the eve of one of their biggest games of the tournament.
Videos shared on X showed a large crowd gathered outside the Ecuador team’s hotel, with supporters singing, beating drums and blaring car horns throughout the night. Javier Aguirre’s team won all three of their group-stage games without conceding a goal and head into the contest on a si match winning streak.
Their last loss came in their final game of 2025. Since then, Mexico have won nine games and drawn two, conceding just twice during that run. El Tri will now be hoping to equal or go past their best-ever FIFA World Cup performances, having reached the quarterfinals as hosts in 1970 and 1986. Mexico are the first country to host the FIFA World Cup thrice. Aguirre could also be tempted to hand 17-year-old Gilberto Mora another start after he became the youngest Mexican to start a FIFA World Cup game against Czechia.
