In a major breakthrough in the Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) paper leak case, Maharashtra Police has arrested Suman, the wife of alleged mastermind Bijendra Gupta, from Bihar. According to sources, Suman was aware of the paper leak racket, and investigators believe Gupta conducted several financial transactions in her presence. Preliminary investigations have also revealed that Gupta allegedly earned crores of rupees through the paper leak network. Investigators suspect that the proceeds were used to acquire properties, including a flat in Delhi and a house in Patna. Read Full Story Police are now probing how Gupta amassed these assets despite having no known source of income or regular occupation. Investigators suspect the properties were acquired using proceeds from the paper leak syndicate.
Meanwhile, Gupta, who is alleged to be the mastermind behind the racket, remains absconding. The Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) 2026, which was scheduled to be held on June 28, was postponed by the Maharashtra State Council of Examination (MSCE) after concerns emerged over a possible question paper leak. So far, three people have been arrested in connection with the alleged paper leak after police recovered four sets of question papers during a trap operation in the Kongaon area of Thane district, officials said. The arrested accused โ Akash, Rajiv and Dheeraj โ had travelled from Delhi. One of them is a resident of Haryana, while the other two are from Bihar. Subsequent investigations identified Gupta as the alleged mastermind of the paper leak.
Investigators also believe the question papers were brought from Delhi, with the accused allegedly demanding around Rs 1.5 crore in exchange for the leaked papers. BIJENDRA GUPTA: THE ALLEGED MASTERMIND Gupta, a resident of Samastipur in Bihar, is no stranger to allegations surrounding examination paper leaks. He has allegedly been linked to multiple such cases and has evaded arrest on several occasions. Even as Maharashtra Police continue their search for Gupta, an India Today sting operation conducted in 2024, in which he featured, has once again come into focus. Following the alleged NEET-UG paper leak in 2024, India Today conducted a sting operation in Patna in which Gupta spoke at length about the alleged workings of the paper leak network and made a series of startling claims.
Claiming to have spent over 25 years in the paper leak business, Gupta alleged that he had been involved in leaks related to the 2023 Odisha Staff Selection Commission (OSSC) examination, the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) examination and the Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission (MPPSC) examination. During the sting operation, Gupta explained how question papers were allegedly leaked. He claimed that sealed boxes were often tampered with while being transported to examination centres. He also alleged that blacklisted companies continued to secure transportation contracts. Perhaps his most chilling claim during the sting was that paper leaks would never stop. "We'll go to jail, get bail, and the game will continue," Gupta had said. Ends
