A railway bridge over the Simen River in Assam's Dhemaji district partially collapsed on June 28 after heavy rainfall and a sudden surge in water following a cloudburst upstream in Arunachal Pradesh. The incident has cut off a remote but strategically important region of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh from the rail network. The area received more than 110 mm of rainfall in and around Dhemaji district, triggering flooding and severe bank erosion that damaged the railway bridge.
Built in 1965 and later converted to broad gauge, the bridge is a key piece of rail infrastructure and was reportedly in good condition before the collapse.
