During his three-day visit to Seychelles, Prime Minister Narendra Modi showcased India’s rich artistic traditions and centuries-old craftsmanship through a specially curated set of gifts presented to the island nation's leaders. Seychelles President Patrick Herminie was presented with a Moradabadi brass tortoise, handcrafted by artisans from Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh — globally known as "India’s Brass City”. The gift also carried a special connection with Seychelles, home to the iconic Aldabra Giant Tortoise, creating a symbolic link between Indian craftsmanship and the island nation’s natural heritage.
Read Full Story First Lady Veronique Herminie received two examples of India’s artistic traditions — a Maheshwari Silk Stole and a Bidriware Box. The Maheshwari Silk Stole, originating from Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh, combines silk and cotton yarns and features delicate geometric and floral motifs. The Bidriware Box from Bidar, Karnataka, features intricate silver inlay work on a black oxidised zinc and copper alloy surface, with detailed geometric and floral patterns crafted by hand. Vice President Sebastien Pillay received an orchid art painting from Sikkim, which blends the state's floral heritage with national bird, the peacock.
The painting carried a diplomatic symbolism — while the peacock represents India’s cultural identity, the orchid is the national flower of Seychelles. Second Lady Lina Pillay, wife of Vice President Sebastien Pillay, was gifted a Kanjeevaram silk fabric. The fabric featured a rich maroon base with gold zari motifs and a traditional red, green and gold border inspired by temple architecture and natural elements. Seychelles Assembly Speaker Azarel Ernesta received a Toda Embroidered Shawl, crafted by the Toda community of the Nilgiri Hills in Tamil Nadu.
The handmade textile features bold red and black geometric embroidery on a white cotton base, created using the traditional Pukhoor weaving technique. Traditionally worn during sacred ceremonies, the shawl represents the preservation of indigenous knowledge and cultural identity. During the visit, Seychelles President Herminie also conferred the “Guardian of the Blue Horizon” honour on Prime Minister Modi, recognising India’s role in strengthening ties with the island nation.
