Gor was addressing the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum Leadership Summit in Washington. Weighing in on the scope of bilateral relations between New Delhi and Washington, he stressed the two nations have common ground to expand cooperation across sectors. “… India is in a tough part of the world. There are some tough and rough neighbours and you have individuals that wake up in a bad mood and things change in that part of the world", Gor said.
The U.S. envoy highlighted that the ties between the two countries are defined by mutual interest and commonalities, which are not subject to short-term political cycles. “The United States and India have so much in common and that is something that will sustain us for decades to come. You pick the sector, AI, technology, aviation, no matter what it is, we have a potential to work together. These next two years will set the relationship on a path for several decades ahead…" he said. #WATCH | Washington DC | At the IX USISPF Leadership Summit 2026, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor says, “… India is in a tough part of the world. Earlier this month, the U.S. announced that its Indo-Pacific Command would restore its name to the Pacific Command (USPACOM), dropping ‘INDO’ from the name of its oldest and largest unified command.
The move sparked concerns in India, with observers suggesting the change signaled a shift in Washington’s approach towards the Quad and its Indo-Pacific strategy. During Trump’s first term, the Pacific Command was renamed as Indo-Pacific Command, solidifying New Delhi’s growing importance in the region. “Yes, the name changed; we’re still there. India still has more exercises with the United States than any other country by far. Every single month there’s something happening, whether it’s Indian troops coming here or whether it’s U.S. troops going into the region," Gor said. Meanwhile, India and the U.S. are in the process of finalising a trade deal agreement. Back in February, the two countries agreed on the legal framework of the pact, but the final deal is yet to be signed.
