Jaipur SMS Hospital: 11 Kidney Transplants Stalled Over Locked Files Amid Doctor Shortage

An India Today investigation reveals a severe healthcare crisis at Sawai Man Singh Hospital in Jaipur, where 11 kidney transplants have been stalled since May 31. Despite patients completing mandatory clearances, obtaining police verification, and securing donor fitness certificates, surgeries face delays because medical files remain locked inside the room of the recently retired head of the nephrology unit.
The crisis exposes administrative lapses, with acting doctors claiming files were not handed over. The investigation further highlights that Rajasthan's government healthcare system functions with only six senior nephrologists for the entire state. Families allege that government doctors neglect duties to work in private hospitals. Following the report, the hospital administration opened the locked room and assured that the pending transplants would be conducted shortly.
Patients have been surviving on regular dialysis while waiting for the life-saving procedures, bearing the brunt of the systemic shortage of specialists and inter-departmental conflicts.
