The Karur Assembly seat in Tamil Nadu has been declared vacant after former state minister MR Vijayabaskar resigned as MLA, taking the total number of vacancies in the House to seven, an official said on Tuesday. With seven seats now vacant, the state is set for bypolls. Vijayabaskar, who won from Karur in the April 23 Assembly election, resigned on June 29 and is likely to join the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. Read Full Story He had defeated TVK candidate V P Mathiyalagan in Karur and was among 25 rebel AIADMK MLAs who voted in favour of the TVK government during the floor test in the Assembly on May 13.
His resignation made him the sixth AIADMK legislator to step down after the party's setback in the Assembly election. The party has been facing an exodus of cadres since the results were announced on May 4. Following his resignation, the number of vacancies in the Assembly rose to seven, including six caused by the resignations of AIADMK MLAs and Tiruchirappalli East, which was vacated by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay after he won from two seats and retained Perambur in Chennai.
This has brought the AIADMK's strength in the Assembly down to 41 from 47. All six lawmakers who resigned had voted in favour of the TVK government during the floor test, defying the party line. Days after the floor test, AIADMK members Maragatham Kumaravel, P Sathyabama, S Jayakumar and later Esakki Subaya resigned and joined the TVK. Earlier, former health minister C Vijayabaskar, a medical doctor by profession, resigned as MLA and quit the party.
He is likely to join the TVK soon. The resignations have led to vacancies in Karur, Viralimalai, Madurantakam, Dharapuram, Perundurai and Ambasamudram, besides Tiruchirappalli East, setting the stage for bypolls in all seven constituencies. Ends
