'Tremendous Loss': Trump Blasts US Supreme Court's Ruling Allowing Late-Arriving Mail Ballots Published By, Last Updated: June 29, 2026, 22:44 IST Trump argued that votes should not be counted long after Election Day and used the ruling to renew his push for the SAVE America Act. (Getty Images via AFP) US President Donald Trump on Monday slammed the US Supreme Court after it upheld a state law allowing mail-in ballots received after Election Day to be counted. The 5-4 ruling marks a setback for Republican efforts to impose tighter voting rules, as the court rejected a challenge by the Republican Committee to a Mississippi law permitting absentee ballots to be counted if they are postmarked by Election Day and arrive within five business days. Shortly after the ruling, Trump took to Truth Social, where he called the decision as a “tremendous loss" for “voter’s rights".
He argued that votes should not be counted long after Election Day and used the ruling to renew his push for the SAVE America Act. SC upholds Mississippi mail-in ballot rule The case centred on a Mississippi law that allows late-arriving mail ballots to be counted if they meet the postmark deadline. The Supreme Court’s conservative majority upheld the law, in a decision that could have wider implications, as around 30 US states allow some form of post-election counting of absentee ballots. Mail-in voting has grown in use in recent years, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, and is more commonly used by Democratic voters than Republicans. Trump has long been a vocal critic of postal voting and has repeatedly claimed, without evidence, that it contributed to his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden. In March, he signed an executive order aimed at restricting mail-in voting, but it has been blocked by lower courts.
Push to pass SAVE America Act In his Truth Social post, Trump renewed his push for the “SAVE America Act", a proposed election reform package. The plan includes mandatory photo identification for all voters, proof of citizenship requirements, and strict limits on mail-in ballots, except in cases of illness, disability, military deployment, or travel. Trump also criticised lawmakers for failing to advance the legislation, noting that the House of Representatives has passed it multiple times while the Senate has not acted. “In a time when there is a powerful Communist Movement taking place in our Country, one more dangerous than World War I, World War II, Pearl Harbor, or September 11th, all Dumocrats, and our five Republican Senate Hold Outs, Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, Thom Tillis, Bill Cassidy, and Mitch McConnell must vote to SAVE OUR COUNTRY. There can be no more excuses!" Trump concluded.
