(IMAGE: REUTERS) Pakistani police locked down the town of Kahuta in Rawalpindi district on Monday after 14 prisoners escaped from a police van by allegedly throwing chilli powder into officers’ eyes while being transported to Adiala Jail following a court appearance.
According to police, the prisoner van had stopped near Chakiyan Post for checking when officers opened its door. At that point, one of the inmates allegedly hurled chilli powder at the escorting personnel, allowing all 14 prisoners to flee the vehicle. Police later recaptured four of the escapees, while a massive search operation remained underway to trace the remaining 10 fugitives. Authorities sealed all entry and exit points to Kahuta, cordoned off the Chakiyan Post and surrounding areas, and intensified snap-checking across the town. Vehicle checks were also stepped up on Kahuta Road as additional police personnel were deployed to aid the search.
Senior police officers rushed to the scene to oversee the operation, while residents were urged to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious individuals to the authorities. The prisoners were being shifted to Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail after appearing before a court when the escape took place. Police said efforts to apprehend the remaining fugitives were continuing. The latest jailbreak comes nearly a year after more than 200 inmates escaped from Karachi’s Malir Jail during an earthquake-triggered evacuation. According to Geo News, at least one prisoner was killed and several security personnel were injured during that escape.
