(Image: AFP) Iran is reportedly seeking Chinese guarantees before finalising any agreement with the United States over the ongoing West Asia conflict, according to top security sources, signalling Tehran’s continued mistrust of Washington despite ongoing negotiations. Sources claimed Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir conveyed Iran’s position to senior Chinese leadership during engagements in Beijing, as diplomatic efforts intensify around a possible US-Iran understanding.
According to the sources, Tehran wants Beijing to act as a guarantor for any future arrangement involving the United States, particularly on issues linked to regional security and Iran’s nuclear programme. One of the key developments under discussion, sources said, is that Iran may be willing to transfer its stockpile of highly enriched uranium to China, provided there are “high-powered guarantees" attached to the arrangement. The issue of enriched uranium has emerged as one of the biggest sticking points in US-Iran negotiations. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly insisted that Iran cannot retain highly enriched uranium and has said Washington would not allow Tehran to possess material that could support weapons development. Iran, however, has reportedly resisted sending uranium abroad without assurances, reflecting deeper concerns about trust and long-term enforcement of any agreement.
Sources further indicated that another round of discussions related to the US-Iran conflict is likely to take place in Doha, which has increasingly emerged as a diplomatic hub for regional negotiations. Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir is also expected to travel to Qatar for further consultations, according to the sources. There are additionally reports that senior US officials may already be present in Doha as part of ongoing backchannel or indirect negotiations with Iranian representatives. The developments come after reports that Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had reached Doha for talks. The reported diplomatic activity highlights growing international involvement in efforts to avoid renewed conflict between Iran and the US, with China, Pakistan and Gulf states increasingly playing intermediary roles. However, none of the claims regarding China’s proposed guarantor role, uranium transfer or specific diplomatic arrangements have been officially confirmed by the governments involved.
