(Image: Reuters/File) After US President Donald Trump stated that he had urged several Muslim-majority countries to join the Abraham Accords and normalize relations with Israel, Pakistan on Monday rejected the proposal. The US President said he had approached Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, Egypt and Jordan as well to sign the accords, Reuters reported.
Trump added that he had spoken over the weekend with leaders from those countries, along with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, which are already signatories to the accords. In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “I am mandatorily requesting that all Countries immediately sign the Abraham Accords, and that, if Iran signs its Agreement with me, as President of the United States of America, it would be an Honor to have them also be part of this unparalleled World Coalition." Islamabad Says Iran Diplomacy, Israel Ties ‘Not Interlinked’ However, a Pakistani source familiar with the matter rejected any linkage between Iran-related diplomacy and the Abraham Accords framework. “Pakistan is under no compulsion to adhere to any such demand," the source said, adding that the two issues were “not interlinked and cannot be made so," the report mentioned.
Abraham Accords Expansion Facing Resistance In Muslim Nations? Besides Pakistan, Saudi Arabia also rejected the proposal, saying it will not move towards normalising relations with Israel unless there is a clear and irreversible pathway to Palestinian statehood. Analysts believe wider support for the Abraham Accords among Muslim-majority countries remains unlikely at present due to strong public anger over Israel’s military offensive in Gaza. All About Abraham Accords The Abraham Accords are US-brokered agreements launched in 2020 to normalize relations between Israel and Arab nations. The first deals were signed by the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain on September 15, 2020, and later expanded to include Morocco and Sudan. Kazakhstan joined the grouping in 2025. Named after the shared Abrahamic roots of Judaism, Islam and Christianity, the accords marked a major diplomatic shift by prioritizing trade, security and regional cooperation over linking ties with Israel to resolution of the Palestinian issue.
