Notorious dacoit Jagan Gurjar, who was lodged in a high-security jail in Rajasthan’s Ajmer, was allegedly killed by another inmate after a scuffle inside their cell, police said on Sunday. Police said the incident took place between 11 am and 3 pm. Gurjar was allegedly strangled with a towel by Vishnu, the inmate with whom he shared the cell. A forensic team has reached the jail to collect evidence, and the body has been sent to the mortuary for a post-mortem. The accused, Vishnu, had been living with Gurjar in the same cell," Ajmer SP Harshvardhan Agarwalla told news agency PTI.
A jail official said, "They were locked in at 11 am and when a guard went to the cell at 3 pm, he found him dead. The body had no visible sign of injury". The official said Vishnu has been lodged in the high-security jail for the past three years, while Gurjar was shifted there in March this year. During questioning, Vishnu claimed he had strangled Gurjar with a towel, Agarwalla said, adding that the matter would be investigated further. Gurjar, from Rajasthan’s Dholpur district, had nearly 100 police cases registered against him at different police stations. He came into the limelight in 2008 when he allegedly threatened to blow up the residence of the then chief minister Vasundhara Raje in Dholpur.
He later surrendered in 2009 in front of Congress leader Sachin Pilot. In June 2019, Gurjar was arrested for allegedly beating up two women and tearing their clothes. Nearly 500 policemen were deployed in the operation to arrest him. He was arrested again in February 2022 in another case in which he allegedly threatened to kill Girraj Malinga, who was a Congress MLA at the time. Police said Gurjar had entered the world of crime in 1994 and was booked in several cases, but was first arrested in 2001. He was arrested several times after that and was released on bail on many occasions. He had been active in the ravines of the Chambal in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, an area known for bandits and dacoits.
According to police, he had three wives, one of whom was involved in his criminal activities and was injured in a police encounter in Madhya Pradesh several years ago. Gurjar’s death in Ajmer jail is now under investigation, with police examining the alleged scuffle, Vishnu’s claim that he used a towel to strangulate him, and other evidence collected from the cell.
