(Image: AI Generated) When 50-year-old Nithyananda failed to answer repeated phone calls on Monday morning, there was little reason for his family to suspect anything beyond a medical emergency. His wife, Sushila, would soon tell them that he had suffered a heart attack. But when Nithyananda’s elder brother reached the couple’s house in Mysuru’s Kuvempunagar, something didn’t add up. There were visible injury marks around his neck.
That single observation prompted the family to alert the police, setting off an investigation that would soon transform what initially appeared to be a natural death into an alleged murder. According to police, Nithyananda, an employee at a Mahindra showroom, had returned home late on Sunday after consuming alcohol. Investigators allege that after he fell asleep in an intoxicated state, Sushila, a teacher at a private school, strangled him using a rope. Police believe she then attempted to pass off the death as a heart attack. Investigators said Sushila remained inside the house the following morning and did not open the door despite repeated knocks. Concern grew after Nithyananda remained unreachable. His friend, Darshan, visited the residence but received no response.
It was only later that Sushila telephoned Nithyananda’s brother and informed him that he had died of a heart attack. The family’s suspicions deepened after they noticed injuries around the victim’s neck. A complaint was subsequently lodged with the police. During preliminary questioning, Sushila allegedly confessed to the crime, investigators said. Police, however, said further investigation is underway. According to investigators, the couple had been living alone in Kuvempunagar. Police suspect the alleged murder was the culmination of long-standing domestic disputes, including marital discord, childlessness, financial stress and disagreements over property. Sushila has been taken into custody, while police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Nithyananda’s death.
