Congress leaders appealed to the public on Monday to ensure their names figure in the electoral roll by actively participating in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR). In a public meeting organised by the party’s Shivamogga district committee, they maintained that while the Centre was implementing the SIR with an ulterior motive, citizens should participate in the process to retain their voting rights. District Congress Committee president R.
Prasanna Kumar said that Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar had already stated that people who do not figure in the electoral roll would not be eligible for the State government’s guarantee schemes. “The Congress government has been giving five guarantees to people of the State. However, only eligible voters are entitled to enjoy them. Hence, every citizen should get enrolled in the process,” he said. Kumar appealed to booth-level agents appointed by the party to ensure voters in their respective booths got enrolled in the electoral roll.
Minister Kimmane Ratnakar raised objections to the SIR process, stating it was being executed to delete names from the electoral roll. He cited the case of West Bengal, where names of 91 lakh people were removed with minimal opportunity for objections. “The duration to submit documents is too short. When the government takes several months to effect even minor changes to property records, how can it expect people to furnish documents within a few days?” he said.
Minister Madhu Bangarappa said the public meeting had been organised to raise awareness about the SIR process. “Party workers will actively participate in the process and educate the public on furnishing necessary documents for enrolment,” he said.
