The Sri Sathya Sai district police on Monday launched the Locked House Monitoring System (LHMS), a technology-enabled initiative that allows police to monitor locked residences when owners are away, helping to combat burglaries and thefts. Superintendent of Police (SP) S. Satish Kumar, who inaugurated the initiative at the District Police Office (DPO) here, said preventing crime was more effective than investigating it after it occurs.
He said that burglars often identify locked houses and isolated residential areas by observing them for several days, especially during holidays, festivals, and family functions, before committing crimes. The SP said that under the initiative, residents leaving their homes unattended can register their travel details through the LHMS mobile application available on the Google Play Store at least a day in advance.
“The information will reach the district command and control centre before being forwarded to the jurisdictional police station. Police personnel will then install motion-sensor cameras at the premises,” Mr. Satish Kumar said. Demonstrating the LHMS, the SP said that any suspicious movement detected during the owner’s absence would immediately trigger an alert, enabling patrol teams to respond quickly and prevent burglary attempts.
“The public should keep valuables in bank lockers and install CCTV cameras. Their participation is essential for strengthening neighbourhood security and reducing property crimes across the district,” the SP said.
