The AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, on Monday (June 29, 2026), called upon the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led Tamil Nadu government to follow the example set by former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in acquiring equity out of the Union government’s shareholding in Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC).
The Centre had recently proposed disinvestment of equity, yet again. In a statement, he recalled how Jayalalithaa, as the Chief Minister of the State in 2013, pursued the matter of the State public sector units (PSU) buying the stake in the NLC when the Centre had wanted 5% of its equity to be disinvested.
The State PSUs had eventually bought 3.56% of equity. When the NLC was set up in the 1950s, residents of 23 villages had voluntarily come forward to give their land for the power project on the premise that the entity would remain a public sector undertaking.
Palaniswami, while urging the Union government to abandon its attempts to privatise the NLC, added his party would organise stir to stall any move to privatise the Corporation and extend its support for any agitation in this regard.
