A physiotherapist was found dead under mysterious circumstances at a homestay in Karnataka's Chikkaballapur district, while her boyfriend was found unconscious in the same room and hospitalised, police said on Monday. Investigators said the woman, a Hindu, and her boyfriend, identified as Sanjeet Ali, a Muslim man from Kerala, had been in a relationship and had earlier eloped. Following their disappearance, the woman's family had filed a missing complaint. Police said preliminary inquiries suggest the woman's family did not approve of their relationship. Read Full Story According to police, a rope, several tablets, signs of vomiting and a pillow were recovered from the room.
However, investigators found no visible external injuries or blood-related wounds on the woman's body. Police said it was too early to determine whether the case was one of murder or suicide. "It is not yet clear whether this is a case of suicide or murder. Since there are no visible external injuries, we cannot say whether she was murdered, poisoned, or died by suicide. All possibilities remain open," Chikkaballapur Superintendent of Police (SP) Kushal Chowksi said. Police are examining multiple angles, including whether Ali killed the woman and then attempted suicide, whether the couple entered into a suicide pact or whether poisoning was involved.
The exact cause of death will be known only after the post-mortem report and forensic examination, officials said. According to the homestay's booking records, the couple had been staying there for the past three days. The woman had reportedly arrived in Chikkaballapur four or five days ago to volunteer at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) campus. Police said her family had confirmed she came to the area for voluntary service, though authorities are verifying the details with SAI officials. Investigators believe Ali travelled to Chikkaballapur after learning she was there and booked the homestay, where the two later met.
Police said this sequence of events is still being verified. They said Ali had no known criminal records and is believed to be unemployed. His statement is expected to play a crucial role in the investigation once he regains consciousness. SP Chowksi visited the scene and supervised the investigation. Police said further details would emerge after forensic reports are received and Ali is able to speak to investigators. Ends
