A late-night drive nearly turned fatal in Greater Noida after a car plunged into a deep roadside pit that had allegedly been left open for days without barricades, reflectors or warning signs. While the vehicle was badly damaged, the driver narrowly escaped with his life. The incident took place on Saturday night on the main road in Sector Alpha-1 Railway Vihar, where a deep pit had been dug for repairs to a Ganga water pipeline. Read Full Story According to local residents, the excavation had remained uncovered for several days despite posing a serious risk to commuters.
Pramod, who was driving through the stretch at night, failed to spot the pit and his car crashed straight into it. The impact left the vehicle extensively damaged. Fortunately, the driver escaped without suffering life-threatening injuries. 'DEATH TRAPS' IN THE NAME OF DEVELOPMENT Harendra Bhati, a member of the Active Citizen Team, blamed the Greater Noida Authority for the incident, saying its claims of making the city pothole-free ring hollow when dangerous excavations are left exposed. "In the name of development, death traps are being dug across the city," Bhati said.
He added that the authority appeared to have learnt nothing from the tragic death of Yuvraj Mehta. "If barricading, reflectors and warning signs had been installed at the site in time, this accident would not have happened," he said. Bhati also alleged that the Water Department, the Technical Department and the contractor executing the work, if one had been engaged, failed to carry out their responsibilities. Proper inspections and regular monitoring, he said, could have prevented the incident. RESIDENTS SEEK ACCOUNTABILITY Residents and members of the Active Citizen Team have demanded a thorough investigation into the incident and action against those responsible.
They have called for accountability to be fixed on the Water Department, the Technical Department and the contractor concerned. They have also urged the Greater Noida Authority to immediately fill all open pits across the city and ensure every excavation site is secured with barricades, reflectors and warning signs to prevent similar accidents.
