A case of suspected suicide has emerged from the IMS-BHU campus in Varanasi, where a 26-year-old junior doctor was found dead inside his hostel room, allegedly after administering an overdose of anaesthesia drugs to himself through an IV drip. The deceased, identified as Ritwik Kundu, a resident of Hooghly in West Bengal, was pursuing his residency in the Department of Anaesthesiology at the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University (IMS-BHU). Read Full Story According to officials, Ritwik failed to report for classes and duty, prompting colleagues to search for him.
When repeated knocks on the door of his room at Sushrut Hostel went unanswered, the matter was reported to the BHU administration. After the room was forcibly opened, Ritwik was found lying motionless on his bed with an IV drip attached to his hand. Preliminary findings suggest he may have administered anaesthesia medication through the drip, leading to a suspected overdose. However, police said the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after the post-mortem examination and forensic analysis.
Investigators also recovered a handwritten suicide note from the room. In the note, Ritwik reportedly apologised to his parents, saying he had failed to live up to their expectations. He wrote that life was much tougher than it appeared from the outside and that he was ending his life of his own free will. The note also requested that no one be blamed for his death, particularly a young woman whom he described as someone who loved him deeply and had done a great deal for him.
He concluded the note by bidding farewell to his family, friends and the world. Police have taken the body into custody and launched an investigation. Authorities are examining all aspects of the case while awaiting the post-mortem report to establish the precise cause of death. Ends
